Tour Description
We’ll start this tour after breakfast around 8am in the morning to start the short drive to the Angkor Archaeological Park.
The first stop on this circuit is Preah Khan. This 12th century temple translates into English as “Royal Sword” and was built by King Jayavarman VII and dedicated to his late father. It’s located in the ancient city of Angkor Thom and has been largely left to the elements with the jungle literally growing through the middle of the structure.
Next is Neak Pean which is another 12th century temple built by King Jayavarman VII. This temple means the “Entwined Serpents” in English and it is a Buddhist temple built on a man-made island in the middle of Preah Khan baray.
We’ll then head over to Banteay Prei. This quiet temple is great to visit because you can escape the hordes of tourists at the other temples. We’ll then go to Ta Som, another temple built by the prolific King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century. We’ll go to visit East Mebon and Pre Rup temples. Both these temples are good examples of early Khmer architecture and were built in the 10th century.
We’ll then head out to Banteay Srey temple and stop at Banteay Samre along the way. Banteay Srey temple is known as the Citadel of the Women and is a unique temple built during the Khmer empire. This temple contains many fine carvings which are said to be carved by a woman because only the delicate hands of a woman could carve something so fine! The pink sandstone make Banteay Srey a truly unique experience.
